PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Dog lovers have come forward and helped save the leg of an abused puppy in Arizona.

Panacea Animal Wellness Sanctuary (PAWS) took in Miles, a 2-month-old pit bull, and asked for the public's help with the cost of getting his leg repaired.

PAWS said Wednesday afternoon that they've met their goal and Miles is scheduled for surgery on Thursday.

Without surgery, one of Miles' legs likely would have had to be amputated.

The owner told authorities he hit the dog with a sledge hammer to break up a fight and is facing abuse charges.

Officials say when the dog was turned in to a local animal hospital, his elbow was sticking out of his skin in several places.

He was also in serious pain as his wounds were infected.

The surgery to save his leg will cost between $3,000 and $5,000.
