GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
The funeral for retired deputy David Wargo was held today at the Vineyard of North Phoenix Church in Glendale.
Wargo was a medically retired sheriff's deputy, and passed away as the result of injuries he received during a law enforcement incident in 2003. Wargo's injuries occurred when he attempted to contact a suspect getting into his vehicle in a Safeway parking lot. The deputy was dragged by the vehicle causing him extensive head injuries.
He had spent the last nine years of his life paralyzed and under extensive medical care.
"This is a sad day for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office family. We lost a brave deputy who put his life on the line in the interest of public safety. He will not be forgotten," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.
Wargo is survived by his wife Lisa and his three sons Noah, Nickolas and Zachary.
