Gilbert shooting victim's estranged husband speaks out

GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

The estranged husband of Amber Mederos was devastated to hear the news of his wife's murder.

Brandon Castle met Mederos, 23, while they were students at Mesquite High School in Gilbert. Castle says she had a smile that could light up a room.

"She really was the most loving and caring person," he said.

They got married in February 2009. The couple drifted apart, but Castle said they couldn't afford a divorce.  He said they were always there for each other even after they went their separate ways.

When he found out his wife was among those killed, Castle couldn't believe it.

"I couldn't breathe. I couldn't do much. I don't believe that someone could harm such a sweet girl and take such a young life," he said.

Castle said Mederos never talked about J.T. Ready, but said she wasn't like him.

"She never had a hateful bone in her body," he said.

He remembers Ready as a mean person.

"He always had rude comments to make. I don't know if he did it on purpose but he always found a way to put someone down," said Castle.

He hopes his wife will be remembered as a sweet, giving person and a devoted mother.
