Above-normal fire danger for Arizona

BOISE, ID (CBS5) -

For the next few months, most of Arizona is in the wildfire danger zone. That's according to the latest forecast issued by the National Interagency Fire Center.

Included in its forecast released Tuesday: "Above normal significant fire potential is expected across southwestern New Mexico and the southeastern third of Arizona through May."

Ongoing drought conditions, prolonged by a dry La Nina winter, has fire officials across the Southwest on alert.

The one bit of good news is a reduction in the amount of vegetation that could burn because of the extremely dry conditions that persisted through the winter.

During the summer of 2011, the Wallow Fire in Eastern Arizona's White Mountains burned more than 800 square miles of land, making it the largest wildfire in Arizona history.
