Phoenix Marine found dead in San Diego barracks

SAN DIEGO (CBS5) -

A U.S. Marine who was found dead Monday morning inside a barracks room at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego has been identified.

Lance Cpl. Martin Lopez Jr., 20, of Phoenix, was found in his room unresponsive by another Marine, said depot spokesman Major Mike Bommerstead.   

Emergency personnel responded but Lopez was pronounced dead at about 6:20 a.m., Bommerstead said. He was assigned to Service Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, MCRD San Diego.

Lopez enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 2009 and was trained as a finance technician. He joined HQSVCB in December 2009 and was promoted to lance corporal in June 2011. Lopez's personal awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is trying to determine the cause of death.
