Phoenix Mesa-Gateway sees spike in passengers

Posted: Updated:
MESA, AZ (AP) -

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport saw a 51 percent increase in passengers from this time a year ago.

The East Valley Tribune reports that 167,550 passengers used Gateway in the first three months of the year.

January travel was up 30 percent over last year, and February and March were both 60 percent higher.

The airport attributes the increase in part to a busy spring-training season.

Gateway expects that it will continue to see far more passengers this year with the ever-expanding cities served by Allegiant and the arrival of Spirit Airlines.

The airport projects that it will see 1.2 million passengers this year, up from about 950,000 last year.
