Heat making landfill search more challenging

Posted: Updated:
GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Crews are now on their 10th week of searching the Butterfield Landfill for little Jhessye Shockley.

The 5-year-old Glendale girl hasn't been seen since October, and police believe her body is in the landfill.

Each day, crews are sorting stacks of garbage looking for any sign of her, but with the temperatures heating up, the conditions are more difficult for searchers.

"They were still able to press through the amount of trash they were normally doing, but it takes a bit more of a significant impact on their bodies now. The heat's maybe 20 degrees more than when we started," said Sgt. Brent Combs with the Glendale Police Department.

Crews are working from about 6 a.m. until noon, and police still believe they are close to finding the little girl.
