PHOENIX (CBS5) -
An armed man who was shot and wounded after he allegedly threatened an employee inside a Phoenix YMCA and then pointed a gun at police officers remains in stable condition.
Phoenix police say the man, in his 20s, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after Monday afternoon's shooting. His name wasn't immediately released, and he has still not been booked, according to Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.
The man lives on the seventh floor in the YMCA building at 350 North First Ave. and was upset that he was locked out for some reason.
He and a YMCA employee were riding the elevator to the room when the suspect threatened the employee and then showed him a gun on his hip, police said. After a fight broke out between the two of them, the YMCA coordinator was able to escape and called police.
When officers arrived, they found the man on the stairs near the fourth floor.
One officer struggled with him, trying to get the suspect's gun, and then pushed him down the stairs. Another officer turned the corner.
"The suspect pointed the gun at our officer as they were just about face-to-face on the stairwell, and our officer fired one shot," said Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department.
Crump said the suspect was hit but is expected to survive. One officer was hurt in the leg, but nothing serious.
The YMCA said the workout rooms are open, but all classes have been canceled for the night.
Police said drugs were found on the suspect.
