States' readiness ranked in face of water threats

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (AP) -

A state-by-state analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council shows New Mexico, Arizona and more than two dozen other states could face increased threats to water supplies without more planning for rising temperatures and other climate changes.

The nonprofit environmental group released its report Thursday.

One of the things NRDC looked at was whether states were taking steps to curb greenhouse gas emissions -- the pollutants blamed for global warming.

The NRDC's climate and clean air policy director, David Doniger, says he sees emissions reductions as a key to tackling the problem.

California, New York and Maryland are among the states ranked as most prepared.

New Mexico, Arizona and Texas are among the states that have done little to prepare for water-related effects that could stem from climate change.
