U.S. Airways CEO addresses merger rumors

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

There have been a number of rumors going around that Tempe-based U.S. Airways could merge with American Airlines, but right now they're still only rumors.

Today, U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker took part in the Economic Club of Phoenix speaker series.

He told the crowd he wasn't there to break any news about a potential merger but instead talked about what's happening at U.S. Airways.

"As I get started, I do want to note we have some media here and I know we have a lot of rumors and speculation about U.S. Airways, and because of those rumors and speculation, I've been very careful not to get myself in front of the media, but the reality is I agreed to do this before all those rumors and speculation started," said Parker.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for U.S. Airways confirmed to the Associated Press today that the company registered several domain addresses that include the names of both airlines.

They said U.S. Airways bought the domain names to prevent anyone else from buying them and using the names in a way that might negatively impact their brand.
