Senator Pearce to appear at immigration hearing in DC

PHOENIX (AP) -

A U.S. Senate subcommittee will hold a hearing April 24 in Washington on Arizona's tough immigration law and the bill's author will appear.

New York Sen. Charles Schumer says he's accepted former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce's offer to testify at the hearing of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security. Pearce lost his seat after a voter backlash led to his recall.

The hearing occurs a day before the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of SB 1070.

The bill was signed into law in 2010, but the Justice Department filed a lawsuit and a federal court judge issued an injunction halting many parts of the law from going into effect. The Supreme Court will hear legal arguments surrounding that injunction.
