TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A East Texas man is in jail after breaking into a woman's car, stealing her wallet and running from police.

Tyler Police say 38-year-old Allen Sheppard broke into a car this morning and stole a woman's purse. The woman tells police she knew Sheppard and confronted him during the burglary. She says he gave her the purse back but kept her wallet and took off.

The victim reported the incident to police who spotted Sheppard a short time later. Police say Sheppard ran from authorities but they were able to apprehend him in a ditch off Glennwood. Police say Sheppard had a parole warrant out for his arrest.

Police say they do not know the details of the victim and Sheppard's relationship but do know she could identify him by name.

Sheppard is in the Smith County jail charged with burglary of an automobile and evading arrest.
