Senate gives preliminary OK to volunteer militia

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

The full Arizona Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill creating a volunteer, armed militia force for the state.

Supporters say the so-called "special missions unit" of 300 volunteers would help secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

Critics question the need for the force and whether it's wise to arm civilians and put them on the border.

Arizona law allows the governor to form a militia and the Legislature last year passed new legislation specifically reiterating that authority, but Gov. Jan Brewer has not invoked it.

At least 20 other states have militias, but most work in conjunction with the National Guard units in their state. The Arizona militia would be distinct from the Arizona National Guard.

Approval of the bill on a formal vote would send it to the House.
