TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -
The music hit a sour note at Tempe High last night after 23-year-old part-time band teacher Andrew Islas was arrested for reportedly having a sexual relationship with one of his students from August through November of last year.
Lt. Mike Horn from the Tempe Police Department says the band student was 15 when the relationship began and turned 16 during the course of the relationship.
An employee at the school alerted the administration yesterday about the couple's involvement, and they called Tempe police.
Investigators questioned both the teacher and the teenager.
"She did admit to, acknowledge the relationship. Investigators also interviewed the suspect last night and he also made admissions to detectives about the inappropriate relationship that had been ongoing," said Horn.
That relationship played out in several locations, including city parks and possibly on campus, said Horn.
"Right now we know that some of the crimes happened at his residence and also her residence while her parents were away," he said.
The lieutenant says the investigation is still underway and investigators believe there could be more victims.
"We are hopeful that it's an isolated incident, but we just don't know," said Horn.
Tempe police tell CBS 5 the high school is meeting with parents of the band students to personally let them know what's going on.
In the meantime, Islas is being held on no bond and is charged with six felony counts of sexual conduct with a minor.
If anyone has any additional information on this investigation or other inappropriate contacts Islas may have had with other people, call Tempe police at 480-350-8311.
