Grand Canyon district signs donation agreement

Posted: Updated:

An Italian real estate group has pledged to donate money and technology to the Grand Canyon school district if its development plans for a tiny town outside the national park move forward.

The Tusayan Town Council approved rezoning and annexation agreements that pave the way for Stilo Development Group USA to build hotels and homes, and create commercial space.

But critics of the plan gathered enough signatures to put the agreements up for a vote. The developers are challenging the legal sufficiency of the referenda.

The school district says the development would mean more students, which would negatively impact school funding.

Under an agreement signed this week, the developers would fill the funding gap, finance study abroad programs, provide grants and give high school students things like tablet computers.
