LAS VEGAS (AP) -
Residents of Laughlin are turning to Nevada legislators after Clark County Commission members rejected a proposed election that could establish the community's cityhood.
Commissioners said incorporating Laughlin as a city was not financially feasible before taking the unanimous vote Tuesday. County officials estimate Laughlin would start off with a deficit of up to $4.3 million if it were to incorporate.
The vote was the first of two steps required by a new law to determine whether the proposed city is financially viable. If both the commission and legislators say it's not, citizens will not vote on the incorporation question.
The law sets up a March 28 deadline for deciding the matter. A state interim legislative committee declined to bring the issue to a vote at a meeting last week.
