SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
A bizarre attempted robbery ended with the alleged suspect in custody.
Tuesday afternoon, a visibly stressed, 54-year-old woman entered the Bank of America at 3123 N. Scottsdale Rd. She told bank employees that a man had kidnapped her, driven her to the bank and told her to withdraw money from her account to give to him.
She asked the teller to call 911. She said the suspect was parked across the street in her car but she could not identify the man because he had covered his face.
When Scottsdale Police arrived, they found the suspect in the victim's vehicle. According to police, he had a handgun, gloves, ski mask and the victim's cell phone in his possession.
The victim told police that she was in her garage when the suspect first approached her. She said the suspect pointed a gun at her, knocked her down and took her keys.
She says the suspect then forced her into the car and drove her to the bank. He told her to withdraw cash from her account or he would harm the victim and her mother.
It turns out, the alleged suspect is the victim's ex-boyfriend. Police say she did not know it was him because his face was covered. He has been identified as 40-year-old Thanh Andrew Harlan.
Harlan has been booked on one count of kidnapping, armed robbery, theft by extortion, burglary and unlawful use of transportation.
The victim was not injured.
