Mesa traffic restrictions in place for GOP debate

Posted: Updated:
MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Republican presidential candidates are visiting the Valley for the GOP debate at the Mesa Arts Center on Wednesday night, so before you head that way, be aware of traffic restrictions.

To add to the congestion, a debate viewing party with a large screen and vendors will take place outside the arts center.

Beginning Wednesday morning, Main Street is closed in both directions between Center Street and Sirrine/Centennial Way. In addition, Center Street between Main Street and First Avenue and First Avenue between Center Street and Sirrine will also close in both directions. Only local traffic will be allowed on Sirrine between Main Street and First Avenue.

At 1 p.m. Wednesday, eastbound traffic on Main Street will be blocked at Macdonald while Sirrine between Main Street and First Avenue will close in both directions. By 4 p.m., westbound traffic on Main Street will shut down from Hibbert to Centennial Way/Sirrine.

All streets will reopen by late Wednesday night or early Thursday.

Despite the traffic restrictions, downtown Mesa businesses will be open. Free parking is located in lots off Pepper Place and 1st Avenue between Center Street and Macdonald. The Mesa Arts Center parking lot will be closed to the general public.
