PHOENIX (AP) -
A bill to generally require that full-time students pay at least $2,000 toward their annual tuition at a state university gets its first hearing Wednesday.
As introduced, the bill would prohibit students from using university-provided grants, scholarships or tuition benefits to provide the students' minimum share.
However, Rep. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills has said he plans to make changes to the bill that he is co-sponsoring with 23 other House Republicans.
The bill already has exemptions for athletic scholarships and grants awarded solely on academic merit or a competitive national program.
The state Auditor General's Office reports that nearly half of the in-state resident undergraduate students paid no tuition or mandatory fees in the 2009-2010 school year.
