Police lieutenant under investigation after golf outing

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix police lieutenant is under internal investigation after allegedly using his uniform like a backstage pass at a golf tournament.

According to a police source, Lt. Larry Giebelhausen was off duty when he used his uniform and city car to gain special access to the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale earlier this month.

A Phoenix police spokesman would not confirm the name of the lieutenant involved, but told CBS 5 News that the investigation is going through the discipline process and the lieutenant has been transferred from his specialty position.

Giebelhausen is an avid golfer who in 2009 won a nationwide contest for a chance to play the U.S. Open course with celebrities Michael Jordan, Justin Timberlake and Ben Roethlisberger.

At the Encanto golf course in Phoenix, other golfers jokingly said they couldn't blame Giebelhausen for trying to get behind the scenes at the tournament.

"I'd probably do something similar. I remember I got into a Super Bowl party way back when dressed as a waiter, so why not?" said golf enthusiast Kort Kleinman.
