Glendale police warn of new burglary tactic

GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Glendale Police are warning residents of a new tactic burglars are using to enter a home.

The suspect knocks first or rings the doorbell. When there's no answer and the thieves believe there's no one home, they try to break in, usually through a side or back door, said Sgt. Brent Coombs.

Coombs said residents should approach these situations a little differently than the way they might want to react - don't stay silent.

If you are home alone and there's a knock at the door,  try to see who's there as quickly as possible, without opening the door, he said.  If you don't immediately recognize the person, do not open the door, but let them know in a loud voice that there are people at home, Coombs said.

Tell them that you are calling the police and then dial 911, preferably with a cordless phone so you can stay mobile, Coombs said.

Make sure all doors are locked and then try and see what the person at the door is doing.
