New tool available for backyard scorpion hunts

GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

It's called the Scorpion Hunter "Scout." It's a new black light flashlight that's been in the works for three years by Neutek, a local LED development company.

A Valley pest company plans to sell it.

"It will be helpful to us and the homeowner who likes to do the weekend warrior scorpion night hunts," said Andy Witcher, of Scorpion Tech.

The new black light flashlight will use a single 3-watt LED bulb. According to creators, it emits a more powerful and crisp beam of light compared to products of the same class currently on the market.

"It's a spotlight and a floodlight, all in one tool," said Kelly Walterscheid, of Neutek. "The optics are better. It will be the most powerful tool in its class."

Also, the three C batteries it requires will give it more juice.

"It's better technology. If you look at them side by side, you (can see the differences in) the strength of light," said Witcher. "The application for us is that (the light) will go further down into cracks and crevices and you can see scorpions you wouldn't otherwise see. From that standpoint, it's much more effective."

Walterscheid compared the technology to the new projector beam headlights on some of the new cars on the market.

Neutek and Scorpion Tech said the "Scout" would be available in about a month, in time for scorpion season.

It's expected to retail at about $50. The smaller black light flashlight, commonly available at drugstores, sells for about $12 and use AAA batteries.

Scorpion Tech expects to have information available in about a month.  http://scorpiontechpestcontrol.com/
