Task force busts, deports smuggling scout

PINAL COUNTY, AZ (CBS5) -

The West Desert Task Force identified and successfully removed an advance scout in a smuggling operation who was in the country illegally from Mexico, according to Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

That scout lived on a hill and relayed information to fellow smugglers who were attempting to avoid detection, according to PCSO.

Task force members also discovered several scout camps along this hill, cell phones, small solar panels used for powering battery chargers, as well as clothes and other items consistent with camping for long periods of time.

The task force was formed as a joint initiative between U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations and the Pinal County Sheriff's Office on Jan. 16 and has arrested 30 people, seized 10,785 pounds of marijuana and recovered 18 stolen vehicles, according to the sheriff's office.

The Pinal County Sheriff's office also provided this edited video of that bust and several others. At this time, CBS 5 News has decided not to air the video on TV. We have submitted a Freedom of Information Act request that would allow us to look at the unedited video and make an editorial decision about it's use. So far, that request has been denied. We are unable to verify for our viewers how the video was obtained, or assure you that it is an accurate portrayal of the event.
