PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Sometimes all it takes is a little, stuffed bear.
Phoenix police officers swear by their Crimes Against Children Unit's practice of giving out a stuffed toy to children at crime or accident scenes as a way for the child to cope with the trauma around them.
But the need continues to grow. According to the department, it has given out up to 300 bears on one very busy week. But help has arrived to coincide with Arizona's Centennial.
On Tuesday, students from St. Thomas the Apostle School, along with help from the Parkway Children's School of Excellence, donated more than 1,300 stuffed animals to the Police Department.
The STA kindergartners formed a human "bear chain" to count out the first 100 bears in honor of the state's birthday.
The school-wide "Bears For The Brave" drive involved all grades and was part of their "STA Serves" community service project.
