PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Becca Fisk runs Arizona's Safe Baby Haven Foundation. She said she wants every scared, desperate young mom-to-be to know there's an alternative to leaving an unwanted baby on a doorstep or in a dumpster.
Under Arizona's Safe Haven law, a newborn up to 3 days old can be dropped off at any church, fire station or hospital - no questions asked.
She's been following the story of Baby Kathleen, found on a Phoenix doorstep earlier this week, closely.
"After this happened, we're completely fired up about getting this (information) into the schools," said Fisk.
One of Fisk's own children – Emily – was a safe haven baby. Emily, who is now 3 years old, was dropped off at a safe haven location in July 2008.
"She's a sweet, sweet addition to our family. She's incredible," said Fisk.
She said getting the message about Arizona's Safe Haven Law into schools has been an uphill battle.
"We haven't gotten in very far except for Phoenix Union. Their head nurse there is amazing, putting posters up throughout schools," said Fisk. "But it's a big hurdle to get into all the schools. There's a lot of red tape. People's first thought - is it political?" she said.
She said their organization also lacks resources, and that has made getting the message out more difficult.
