MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
Nearly 2,000 Arizona students, who otherwise would go without needed school supplies, are now getting them thanks to a non-profit group.
Feed the Children and the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) partnered to distribute 1,920 backpacks containing school supplies, non-perishable food, toiletries and children's books. The backpacks were brought to the Homeless Students Liaisons to be given to the students throughout the year.
"The goal of our backpack program is to nourish both the minds and bodies of impoverished children so they can reach their potential in the classroom," says Tony Sellars, spokesperson for Feed the Children. "NAEHCY continues to show its dedication to this mission to care for the physical, emotional and educational needs of Arizona's most vulnerable citizens."
Feed the Children spokesperson Mark Opgrande said last year, they provided more than 133 million pounds of food and other essentials to children and their families across the country and internationally.
