PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The 40- to 50-person crew continued the daunting task today of sifting through 6,000 tons of trash at the Butterfield Landfill. One shovel at a time, investigators are hoping to turn up any kind of evidence of little Jhessye Shockley.
The 5-year-old was reported missing in October, and Glendale police think her body is in the landfill.
Police say it's a very meticulous and thorough search.
Glendale Police Spokeswoman Tracy Breeden says it's only day two and believes they are making progress. She says the search will still likely take four to six weeks.
The crews are working dawn to dusk, searching an area 180 feet by 200 feet and 20 feet deep.
Breeden said, "We have heavy equipment out there that's moving the trash from the area to a search pad." She says from there, crews are using a rake-like tool to sort through the trash.
Gilbert, El Mirage and Phoenix police are helping with the search, as well as the FBI.
