Council to revisit public art in Prescott

PRESCOTT, AZ (AP) -

The Prescott City Council plans to revisit the issue of public art with a presentation from the Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council.

The Daily Courier reports the arts council has been working on a policy in response to a decorative park bench that a Prescott College student created at Granite Creek Park as part of her senior project.

City officials in 2011 objected to the bench contending its sharp edges posed a safety hazard and the intricacies of the mosaic design would be difficult to preserve. However, supporters contended the religious symbols sparked the most objections.

A parks and recreation crew entered the park, demolished and removed the bench on Oct. 25, sparking more controversy.

City officials hope to avoid future clashes by instructing the arts council to develop a public art policy.
