Super Bowl gun control ad turns heads in AZ

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Super bowl commercials are designed to get attention, and there is one advertisement we did not see in Arizona, but it already has people here talking.

It has to do with gun control, a message that a lot of people in our state see as an infringement of their second amendment rights.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is no stranger to telling Arizona what he thinks of our guns laws.

Investigator: "You guys licensed dealers or ..."

Seller: "No. No tax."

This came from video after Bloomberg sent undercover officers into an Arizona gun show last year.

Investigator: "So no background check?"

Seller: "No."

Investigator: "That's good because I probably couldn't pass one, you know what I mean?"

It uncovered the sale of firearms to people who he thought should not have them.

It's no secret Bloomberg has some strong feelings about gun laws and he's not backing down. Not even during the Super Bowl.

An advertisement he starred in with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino shows the two of them promoting a political message.

"We both support the Second Amendment and believe America must do more to keep guns out of the hands of criminals," they said in the advertisement.

So, CBS 5 News took the ad to a Super Bowl party to get some feedback.

"I say, if you can afford it, and you can do it, and you have something to say, I'm all for it," said Michela Davidson with Davidson and Belluso Advertising and Design.

"I think the Super Bowl ads tend to be fun and uplifting and everybody is trying to have fun today and I kind of feel it's a bit of an ego trip for the two mayors," said Doug McDonald.

The advertisement is promoted by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
