Parking meter hours changed in downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Phoenix City Council unanimously voted to change parking meter enforcement hours back to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday starting immediately.

The information labels on the meters will be changed over the next few weeks to reflect the new hours.

"Today's vote is a win for our downtown businesses that want evening and weekend parking available to their customers," said Vice Mayor Michael Johnson, whose district includes the downtown area.  "The evening hours were added in 2008 and for me, this was a matter of re-examining that decision and keeping our customers downtown, which is not only good for local businesses, but it's important for the city as a whole."

The city of Phoenix provides digital coin operated parking meters for convenient, short-term parking and currently has about 2,400 meters in the downtown, capitol and uptown areas.

The rate for parking meters citywide remains at $1.50 per hour.
