PHOENIX (AP) -
Drivers who park in downtown Phoenix will no longer have to feed parking meters after 5 p.m. on weekdays.
The Phoenix City Council responded to a request from small businesses and voted this week to immediately shorten parking-meter hours on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Arizona Republic reports the hourly charge remains a $1.50.
The longer hours had boosted revenue by $2 million a year since 2008.
The council also took action by ending Saturday meter hours.
Meanwhile, the council also voted to seek bids on high-tech meters using credit cards that would replace coin-operated meters.
