PHOENIX (CBS5) -
State flags will be flown at half-staff Friday in honor of retired state Supreme Court Justice Michael D. Ryan who passed away Monday.
The funeral mass will be at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Church, 4715 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
A scholarship fund has been established in his name for children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen, with an emphasis on priority going to those children who have lost a parent in combat:
Additionally, Ryan was to receive the "Service Above Self" award on May 12, 2012, from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation for his lifetime of service, and dedication to the Marine Corps and to Arizona. The Marine Corps Scholarship Committee has established a special scholarship fund to honor Ryan. Information on how to donate to the fund may be found at www.mcsf.org/judgeryan.
Ryan is survived by his wife Karen, three sons, and two grandchildren.
Gov. Jan Brewer released the following statement Thursday.
Justice Michael Ryan will be remembered for his public service, both to his State and Nation. Whether from the bench of the Arizona Supreme Court or the battlefields of Vietnam, Justice Ryan served with honor and distinction.
It is this honor and distinction that led Justice Ryan to earn two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star during a tour as a Marine in Vietnam. It is this honor and distinction that guided him during 24 years of service as a Superior Court judge, appellate-court judge and, ultimately, Supreme Court Justice.
Today, I invite all Arizonans to join me in offering a prayer for Justice Michael Ryan and his family and friends. In tribute to Justice Ryan, I have ordered that all state flags be flown at half-staff on the day of his memorial services - Friday, February 3, 2012 - as well as the day of his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
