DPS officer involved in crash on Interstate 10

A Department of Public Safety officer was involved in a crash on Friday night.

It happened along Interstate 10 near Southern Avenue.

CBS 5 News is told the officer's patrol car was hit by a suspected drunk driver. 

The officer was in the front seat and had two civilians in the back as he prepared to give them a ride away from an earlier accident.

As they waited for the tow truck to take away the civilians' car, they were rear-ended by a man suspected of driving while impaired.

The officer was transported to Maricopa County Medical Center and one of the civilians was taken to Tempe St Luke's Hospital. Both had serious injuries but are expected to make recoveries.
