State House Speaker Andy Tobin is proposing that Arizona hold a May special election for voters to consider alternative redistricting maps to use in the 2012 elections in places of ones drawn by the Independent Redistricting Commission.
Tobin introduced legislation to put alternative congressional and legislative maps on a May 15 special election ballot.
He also wants to ask voters to amend the Arizona Constitution to revamp the makeup of the independent redistricting commission.
Tobin is a Republican who has been a vocal critic of the redistricting commission, saying its work favored Democrats. His office says he's not immediately available for comment on the legislation introduced Thursday evening.
House Minority Leader Chad Campbell says Tobin is trying to undermine the will of the voters and have maps that favor Republicans.
