Electric and radio control festival gets underway

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (CBS5) -

It was all eyes to the sky today in Apache Junction.

This weekend, the city is hosting the eighth annual Arizona Electric Festival at the Superstition Airpark.

Two hundred pilots showed off their flying skills as they sent electric radio-controlled planes and helicopters into the air.

"It amounts to putting a few things together from glue and put in electronics and hardware. In just a couple of hours to a couple of days, and you could be in the air flying," said Aaron Lichtenwalner, director of the event.

If watching the show inspires you to try making your own model aircraft, plenty of vendors will be on site at the festival selling models and supplies.

Admission to the event is free, but parking is $6 per car.

Gates open at 8 a.m.
