OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
A Shawnee Police officer stopped a car for speeding and ended up delivering a healthy baby boy.
The dad said it was the first time he was actually happy to be pulled over for speeding. The couple was racing to go to Shawnee Mission Medical Center's delivery unit, but their baby had other plans.
"We are very blessed everything went well," Chance Pierce said.
"And we have a healthy a baby," his wife, Taryn Pierce, said.
Taryn and Chance Pierce said they have a lot to be thankful for Tuesday. Sweet little Briggs Michael Pierce is a beautiful baby boy, despite the scare he put his parents through as he made his grand entrance into this world on the side of the road.
"He came into this world fast, very fast," Taryn Pierce said.
She started having contractions at 7 p.m. Monday. She and her husband called a friend to come over and take care of their 1-year-old daughter so they could head to the hospital, but mom's contractions became more rapid.
"We just decided we couldn't wait any longer so we left as she was driving into our neighborhood," Chance Pierce said.
"And we got behind a couple of slow people on our way to the hospital. I just didn't think we were going to make it there," Taryn Pierce said.
So Chance Pierce started speeding around cars down Shawnee Mission Parkway.
"She said ‘I'm not going to make it. He's coming.' I said ‘crap' and I turn on my hazards and start running through red lights and passing people and I'm on the phone with 911 and then when I saw I'm getting pulled over and I hung up," Chance Pierce said.
He said he was relieved to see Officer Nate Karlin deal with the emergency.
"He finds out we are having a baby he kind of freaked out a little bit. He came over to her side and told her to try to quit pushing and she told him she couldn't stop pushing," Chance Pierce said.
He didn't even have an opportunity to get out of the driver's seat when baby Briggs was born in the front passenger's seat.
Karlin held the baby until the ambulance could arrive and now the couple has a message for the officer.
"Thank you for your help," Taryn Pierce said.
"Thank you for not giving us a ticket," Chance Pierce said.
The couple said if they decide to have baby No. 3 down the road, they will race to the hospital immediately after the first contraction.
Karlin was home Tuesday taking care of his sick child and wasn't able to talk about the very unusual experience.
