Tucson reacts to Giffords stepping down

Posted: Updated:

The office of Gabriel Gifford's in Tucson was quiet Sunday, but there was talk around the town of the news of her stepping down.

It was just a few weeks ago when Gabrielle Giffords led the pledge of allegiance in Tucson in front of a large crowd.

She served the 8th Congressional district since 2006, but when you mention the family name Giffords around town, memories started flowing.

Marilyn Freed, a retired teacher and a native of Tucson remembers when a little girl named "Gabby" appeared in her father's Tire Shop Commercials years ago.

"Oh, that's Giff's little girl kind of discussion going around town," she said.

"I feel that she has been through a tremendous amount of healing and recovering and things like that, and I feel that we need to honor her decision," said Aitreyia Reifsnyder.

"It was a very difficult decision I am sure by her and her family, but to serve the district it was time for somebody else to step in," said Frank Scerbo.

"I think she was a pretty good person and she did a lot of good things, but hopefully now she can have some time to herself," said Deven Wisner from Tucson.

In the coming week the congresswoman may not work for Tucson on Capitol Hill anymore, but she will always be a part of this community.

"We only want the best for her. She has a wonderful personality, you can still see it on her eyes and in her smile. Therefore, I hope everything between her and Mark and her family, all the best," said Susan Scerbo.

As one of her last acts as a member of congress Giffords plans to be back in Tucson to finish the "Congress on your corner event."

CBS 5 News is told it will be a private meeting with other survivors who were there that day last January.
