PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced road closures on Friday for the funeral procession for a fallen Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy.

William Coleman was shot and killed early Sunday morning outside a medical building while answering a burglary call in Anthem.

ADOT said the procession from North Phoenix Baptist Church at Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road to Phoenix Memorial Park near Beardsley Road and Seventh Street in north Phoenix will require closures of the northbound lanes of State Route 51, or Piestewa Freeway, and a section of westbound Loop 101 at midday Friday.

  • Northbound State Route 51 is scheduled to be closed between Interstate 10 and Loop 101 starting at approximately 11 a.m. Friday.
  • The westbound lanes of Loop 101 will be closed between SR 51 and Seventh Avenue starting at approximately 11:30 a.m. The closures are expected to be in place for approximately 90 minutes while the procession for Deputy Coleman travels toward and enters the cemetery.

Drivers who normally would use northbound State Route 51 should consider using northbound Interstate 17 as an alternate freeway route while the Friday closure is in place, ADOT said. Westbound Loop 101 traffic can exit to southbound Tatum Boulevard or southbound SR 51 and use westbound Union Hills Drive or Bell Road to northbound Seventh Avenue to travel beyond the Loop 101 closure.

The timing of the procession is subject to change depending on the length of the memorial service at North Phoenix Baptist Church.
