Broncos QB Tim Tebow
Dr. Tim KimmelHe has faith and an arm. And It seems like everyone is talking about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and the "Tebowing" craze.
Some people say his faith is inspiring. Others claim his open expression of faith is uncalled for.
Faith-based author Dr. Tim Kimmel says, "People love underdogs, America loves underdogs."
Kimmel claims "the deck was stacked against" Tebow.
The 24-year-old Tebow is all about football and faith.
"He is just grateful that God has given him the life that he has," Kimmel says.
And it's his profession of faith combined with his ability to bring a team from a losing streak to the playoffs that has everyone talking. Even during the CBS Sports postgame show, staff was seen "Tebowing" Sunday after the Broncos' thrilling 29-23 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"Let's be honest," Kimmel says, "They are in the playoffs and they didn't have a chance until they handed him that ball."
So Sunday, when he threw for 316 yards, Kimmel says it's just a coincidence that Tebow wore the reference to the Bible verse on his eye-black strips while at the University of Florida.
"It's just a coincidence. People are making far more out of it than anything," Kimmel says. Still, John 3:16 was the most Googled search term for a big part of Sunday evening and early Monday morning.
What Kimmel does focus on is Tebow's upbringing, and credits his parents for raising a humble, grateful young man.
"What I know about his parents is that they gave him something bigger to live for than to live his life himself, " Kimmel says.
Whether it's a winning or losing game Saturday on CBS 5, Tebow has already won.
"I think that they've seen that this guy genuinely desires to help that team be a cohesive group of men that are out there working in concert to win," Kimmel says.
Dr. Kimmel does have one word of advice for Tebow: "Just stay humble, don't read your press clippings."
"We are never as good as people say we are, and we are never as bad as they say we are, either," Kimmel says.
"He is more than happy to tell them the source of his joy, hope and confidence," Kimmel says.
"What I don't buy into is that he is jamming it down everybody's throat," Kimmel continues. "He is an authentic person acting out his faith."
He even praised his God when he lost to New England this season.
The next game for the Broncos is Saturday against those same Patriots at New England on CBS 5.
