Police: Evidence points to suicides by Heywoods

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Former Valley radio personality Bill Heywood and his wife Susan have been found dead in a Scottsdale hotel, police said, victims of an apparent suicide.

Police said they both died of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head.  Scottsdale police spokesman Mark Clark said their bodies were found at Homewood Suites at Scottsdale and Shea at about 1 p.m.

Clark said the housekeeping staff found a note on a bedroom door of the suite that two suicides were inside. Clark said two handguns were found near the bodies.

Hotel staff said Susan Heywood had checked in to the hotel around 6 p.m. Tuesday, and that staff had no other contact with the Heywoods, police said.

Evidence at the scene, and at their home in Phoenix, indicates that they had planned their deaths, Clark said.

"We know no one else was involved," Clark said.

Clark confirmed through family members that the couple was experiencing financial troubles and that Susan Heywood was suffering from an illness.

Heywood was a popular host of shows on KTAR for several decades.

David Moskowitz, one of Heywood's former producers, told CBS 5 News he thought Bill was always warm and kind and he liked the way Bill "thought."

"People grew up with Bill who have been in the Valley for a long time," Moskowitz said. "It's huge news. They're going to be shocked."
