Prosecutor: Missing Jhessye Shockley "not forgotten"

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It has been more than two months since 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing out of Glendale.

Her mother, Jerice Hunter, has since been arrested and subsequently released without any charges being filed.  But investigators have said she remains their prime focus.

In the two weeks since Hunter's release from jail, there has been no obvious movement in the case.  On Wednesday, Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said just because the public is not aware of anything going on in the case doesn't mean they are not making progress behind the scenes.

"The Glendale Police Department is still investigating. My prosecutors are assisting, and we're continuing to move forward and assess the evidence and where we're at," said Montgomery.

When asked if they were close to an indictment, Montgomery would not comment one way or the other.

"We have not lost focus on the case of the importance of the investigation," said Montgomery.  "Jhessye Shockley has not been forgotten."

Hunter's attorney, Scott Maasen, said he has been trying to get in touch with investigators and obtain information regarding the evidence police have that implicates Hunter.  Maasen said the lead detective on the case has not returned any of his calls.

All indications indicate investigators and prosecutors are building a case against Hunter.  Meantime, there is still no sign of Jhessye, whom police believe will not be found alive.

Montgomery said it is as important today as it was the first day she vanished to find her.

"It's still very important. Even if for no other reason for us to demonstrate that this community cares and that we didn't write her off," he said.
