PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A teenager faces second-degree murder charges in connection with a 2010 shooting at a Phoenix strip mall that left one bystander dead.
Devonte Mitchell, 18, was booked into jail Monday night on additional charges of aggravated assault, discharging a firearm at a structure and threatening and intimidating.
Police said a second suspect might also be arrested in the future for his involvement in the crime.
Several suspected gang members were involved in the shooting Aug. 7, 2010, at the strip mall located near 6202 South 16th Street, said Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department.
While rivals were shooting at each other, the victim, 17-year-old Alen Belford, walked out of one of the businesses in the strip mall and was struck by gunfire. The victim later died as a result of his injury.
The victim was not believed to be involved in the initial altercation and is not suspected of being a gang member, Martos said.
An officer working in an off-duty capacity at the business complex heard the shooting and gave chase. A large perimeter was set up and officers used K-9 search teams, the police helicopter and the Special Assignments Unit in efforts to find the suspects.
Police detained and questioned two people but they were released.
Over the past year, Martos said detectives have worked at locating and interviewing witnesses to the crime. Witness statements and physical evidence collected at the scene resulted in Monday's arrest, Martos said.
