PHOENIX (CBS5) -
An investigation has wrapped up with no charges filed after a 4-year-old was hurt when he accidentally shot a handgun near his face.
Surprise police spokesman St. Bert Anzini said the boy was alone in the master bedroom of a home located in the 17000 block of West Calavar Road when the shooting happened around 11 a.m. Saturday.
Surprise fire spokesman Captain Renee Hamblin said the boy was taken to Del Webb hospital with injuries that were superficial. He was released the same day.
Hamblin said, "This is why it is so important to keep your guns locked up, it could have been a lot worse."
Anzini said because the boy was alone in the bedroom, little details were gleaned from the incident by investigators.
Anzini said the gun, a semi-automatic pistol, was in a holster on the nightstand when the shooting happened. The caliber of handgun is not known at this time, said Anzini.
The boy's father is a Phoenix police officer, said Anzini. The gun involved was not his service revolver.
No names have been released at this time.
A neighbor told CBS 5 News that the child was home from the hospital by Saturday before 5 p.m., "He's back from the hospital. The fire department just dropped him off. He seems to be fine. I didn't see the injury or anything like that, they had a towel over his head, but he seems to be fine," said Matthew Hantla.
