Pay It Forward: Pizza guy helps vet after motorcycle crash

Posted: Updated:
CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

Joe Bochenek was drafted into the Army in the late 1960s and spent two years deployed overseas.

But he said the closest call he ever had was recently in his Chandler neighborhood.

"I figured I was going to go for a little spin down the block," Bochenek said.

Bochenek said he was on his motorcycle with a distracted pizza delivery guy driving towards him in the opposite direction.

"All of a sudden he just whipped in front of me, cut me off, and instinctively I put the motorcycle down."

Bochenek badly injured his left arm and shoulder, and began losing consciousness after the accident.

Still, the delivery driver took off.

Ironically, another pizza guy was about to come to Bochenek's rescue.

"I never ran that fast in my life, so I went over there picked him up off the ground," said Drew Porter, Bochenek's neighbor.

Porter, a high school senior, works at the Little Caesar's near Gilbert and Pecos Roads.

"He was a godsend, he came to my rescue, I was in shock when I hit the ground," said Bochenek.

Bochenek was so appreciative that he hand wrote a two-page letter to CBS 5 News nominating Porter for our Pay It Forward segment.

We surprised Porter at his work with the $500 reward.

Porter is thinking about enlisting in the military after graduation.

He already learned an important lesson - never leave a man down.
