Gilbert HS bans T-shirts with questionable slogan

GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

A cheerleading squad at Gilbert High School want school administrators to reverse their ban on pink T-shirts they planned to wear to raise money for breast cancer research at Friday's football game.

The shirts are imprinted with "Gilbert cheer" on the front and "Feel for lumps, save your bumps" on the back.

Gilbert High School principal Dr. Santa Cruz said school administration never approved the slogan and stated the squad "may not wear the unauthorized T-shirt with the questionable slogan."

"It is unfortunate that the issue has become more about the slogan than the fight against cancer," Cruz said in a statement.

Natalie Skowronek, who is a member of the cheerleading squad, said they didn't think they'd have to seek approval for the slogan for the fundraising effort.

Parents and people who don't go to the school said they will wear them Friday night anyway in support of the cause, according to Skowronek.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the donations the cheerleaders hope to collect would go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Cruz made it clear that the squad is authorized to raise funds and join the campaign to seek a breast cancer cure by wearing a symbolic "pink" shirt, cap, socks, and ribbon if they desire.

It was unclear what happen if any member of the squad defied the ban.
