You can't say Arizona Department of Public Safety officers don't have a soft spot for furry animals and their safety.
DPS officers briefly closed southbound State Highway 51 just before 8 a.m. Thursday to chase a wayward cottontail rabbit off the freeway.
Arizona Department of Transportation cameras on the highway showed three DPS officers, one carrying a blue tarp, chasing after the rabbit.
After darting in and out of the way of a number of cars, the frisky critter left the freeway at the southbound Bethany Home Road on-ramp.
Traffic was allowed to resume just a "hare" after the rabbit was safely off the roadway.
