A Phoenix couple was forced from their house after a fire that began on their roof spread throughout their home early Tuesday morning.
The couple was asleep in the home near Cactus Road and Tatum Boulevard when the fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. They were immediately evacuated, according to Phoenix Fire Capt. Jorge Enriquez.
He said the fire was believed to have been started by a crew working on the roof and, despite workers' effort, the flames rapidly spread through the attic and into the home by the time fire crews arrived.
The flames weakened the roof to the point where the air conditioning unit collapsed into the home.
Enriquez said the couple is staying with family.
