Anthem doctor gets 25 years for patient deaths

Posted: Updated:

Valley plastic surgeon Peter Normann has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his involvement in the deaths of three of his patients.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Paul Paul McMurdie sentenced Normann Tuesday after he was found guilty of second-degree murder last July in the deaths of a Scottsdale man and California woman and manslaughter in the death of a Gilbert woman.

The three died in 2006 and 2007 at Normann's clinic in Anthem.

"In our society, we all look up to doctors and when they take an oath to do no harm we look up to them and I can't imagine anything more reckless than what you did," Judge Paul McMurdie told Normann.

Lawyers for the 50-year-old Normann claimed the deaths were accidental.

But Maricopa County prosecutors say all three victims were improperly intubated during resuscitation, making it impossible to save them.

Medical examiners say two of the victims overdosed on anesthesia during routine liposuction procedures. The third victim allegedly died of a fat embolism when her own body fat was re-injected into her body to reshape her buttocks.

The deaths prompted on-site inspections by the Medical Board, which found that Normann did not have any employees with formal medical training.

The Medical Board shut down Norman's clinic in July 2007. He was arrested on Oct. 19, 2008.

Normann was indicted by the Maricopa County grand jury back in 2008. In addition to Normann's indictment several of his employees were also indicted on the basis of practicing medicine without a license.

In the courtroom Tuesday morning, Normann apologized for what had happened. He said he hoped his conviction would educate people on the risks involved in cosmetic surgery.
