Davis-Monthan Air Force Base officials said there was no shooting and no one has been hurt although it has stepped up security, locked down an elementary school and limited traffic in and out of the base.
A base spokesperson said the lockdown was sparked by an unconfirmed report of someone carrying a package that could have been a gun.
An elementary school on the base is on lockdown, but a spokeswoman would release few details other than no one was being allowed in or out of the base.
KOLD TV in Tucson is reporting that Sonoran Science Academy/Frank Borman Elementary on base are on lockdown, and that parents are unable to pick up students from the school.
Senior Airman Timothy Dunaway says the Sonoran Science Academy on the base is on lockdown. KVOA-TV was reported the students are safe on the base.
A fire official says two ambulances were sent to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on the outskirts of the southern Arizona city, but a base spokesman said the only incident was a pregnant woman on base who went into labor.
Davis-Monthan is adjacent to the Pima Air & Space Museum and the "boneyard" for old military and government airplanes that is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Caitlin Jones refused to say why the base was on lockdown.
A base spokesperson would only say it has reduced movements to single-point entry due to a potential security situation.
