FBI issues warning to airports

Posted: Updated:

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have issued an intelligence bulletin, asking pilots and airport workers to be on the lookout for suspicious activity at small general aviation airports.

"Violent extremists with knowledge of general aviation and access to small planes pose a significant potential threat to the Homeland," reads the bulletin.

No specific threats are known at this time, but security at general aviation airports, which cater to private and charter props and jets, has been a sore spot for years.

Several government reports have called attention to the issue, and in 2008, a CBS 5 undercover investigation exposed serious gaps in the security at airports in and around the Valley.

The CBS 5 crew was able to gain access to the tarmac at five different airports, including those in Glendale, Chandler, Casa Grande, Eloy and Florence. At two airports, the crew was able to climb inside the planes' cockpits.
